Could we agree that the "good fight" should be improving our profession? We should seek out those who are the most effective with students and share their methods and techniques. Test scores are an important indicator, albeit not the only one.

Public shaming is never effective, but alas while we claim that what we do is "for the children" it is often "all about the adults!" As educators we should be much more critical of our performance before those who do not understand the profession do it to us.

Thoughtful value added rubrics can and should be a valuable tool for improving our profession.

Alchemy indeed, Gary! Thanks for keeping up the good fight on this. Hope our paths will cross again sometime in more than a radio conversation.

It's beyond the scope of reporters and editors to determine how to evaluate members of another profession and then proceed to publish the evaluation. That was already a collapse of journalistic standards and ethics, and the public shaming with names and pictures of specific teachers deemed by the Times to be unsuccessful was more egregious still.
